Walk with Mon people: Mon bridge, Kanchanaburi

Mon bridge

Walking, enjoying the fresh air, immersing in the natural beauty, and experiencing the culture of the Mon people in Kanchanaburi.

The Mon Bridge is the longest wooden bridge in Thailand, spanning 850 meters. It ranks as the second-longest wooden bridge globally, following the U Bein Bridge in Myanmar. This bridge crosses the Songkalia River, which divides the Sangkhlaburi district into two sides. One side of the bridge is home to the Mon community. Aside from its length, what makes this place special is its location at the confluence of three rivers: the Songkalia River, the Ran Tee River, and the Bikhli River, which join together to form the Khwae Noi River.

The Mon people are an ancient ethnic group with a rich cultural heritage. They established a kingdom on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River, in lower Myanmar, with their capital at Thaton, around 241 B.E.

Walking along the bridge, enjoy beautiful views, capture stunning photographs, breathe in the fresh air, and experience the comfortable climate, especially in the late year. You can immerse yourself in the way of life of the Mon people, starting from the bridge and continuing to the Mon community on the other side. The friendliness and hospitality of the Mon people are evident. You can witness them getting dressed up, applying thanaka, and making morning merit. You can also savor a delicious Mon-style breakfast with a unique taste. For those who enjoy water activities, there are rowboats available, and you can even take a boat to explore various tourist attractions in the middle of the water
