The Northeastern region may not always be the first choice or the primary destination for tourists for several reasons and various beliefs. For example, the perception that it is a hot and dry region, not very attractive for travel, with limited facilities,and it’s not as popular as coastal or mountainous areas. And the Northeastern border takes a long time to go. However, the northeastern region still offers many interesting and worthwhile travel destinations.

Mukdahan

Wat Roi Phra Phutthabat Phu Manorom, Mukdahan, located in the Mukdahan National Park area. It features various rare plant species and offers panoramic views of Mukdahan Province, the Mekong River, and the Sapanalao area in Laos. Inside the temple grounds, there is a replica of Phra Phutthabat (Buddha’s footprint), a statue of Phra Phuttharuwidchai, which is 84 meters tall from the base to the tip, and a statue of Naga, known for its beauty and being the largest in Thailand.

Nakhon Phanom

Phra That Phanom, Nakhon Phanom, is a sacred Buddhist site in the Northeastern region. It represents the prosperity of Buddhism in Nakhon Phanom since ancient times, built around the beginning of the Buddhist era. It is the stupa associated with individuals born on a Sunday and is the largest stupa in the northeastern region.

Nongkhai

Skywalk at Wat Pha Tak Sua, Nong Khai, is a temple situated on a high hill, offering beautiful panoramic views all around. From this temple, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Mekong River, one of the most scenic spots in the area. The temple has a circular glass walkway known as the Skywalk for viewing. If you visit in the morning, you may also have a chance to see some mist hovering above the Mekong River.

Sakon Nakhon

Wat Tham Pha Daen, Sakon Nakhon, is another temple located on a high hill, providing impressive scenic views. Inside, there are intriguing rock carvings depicting various stories from Buddhist scriptures. At the top, there is a large golden stone stupa that can be seen from a distance, representing the peak of the mountain. Additionally, there is a beautiful sculpture of a reclining Naga.

Ubonratchathaini

Pha Taem National Park, Ubon Ratchathani, shares its border with the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and is divided by the Mekong River. It features cliffs and wide rocky plateaus, formed by erosion that resembles mushroom-shaped rocks. These rocks reveal shells, corals, and sands within the rock layers, suggesting that this area was once a large sea more than a million years ago. Moreover, during late rainy season to early winter (October to December), wildflowers bloom all over the plateau, creating a colorful spectacle. In addition, there are trails leading to prehistoric rock paintings, estimated to be over 3,000 years old.
